It’s been a struggle for me to blog since I got home from Catalyst. For several weeks leading up to, and for 3 solid days, all I did was blog and tweet and live on the computer. (See all my Catalyst related posts.)

I think my body is detoxing.

And thus, I haven’t had much time, nor desire really, to post a lot here. I have some ingredients in the pot though and hope to roll out some yummy blog goodness starting next week.

Until then, I thought I might share a guest post I wrote recently. My friend, Benson Hines, asked me to share some campus ministry related Catalyst thoughts on his blog, Exploring College Ministry.

Here is an except. Or jump and see the whole post.

When Benson originally asked me to share some insights from the recent Catalyst Conference and how those insights might apply to college ministry, I froze. I drank so deeply from the well at Catalyst that simply choosing one or two insights would be nearly impossible. However, ideas shared at Catalyst have begun conversations within the campus ministry I serve. And it is our responsibility to ensure those conversations translate into action.

One of the most stimulating thoughts I absorbed at Catalyst came from a man named Shane Hipps. Shane served as an advertising executive for Porsche several years ago before God led him to become a Mennonite pastor. Shane stated that we, as Christian leaders, have often heard the phrase, “Methods change; but the Message must never change.” As college ministers, we probably understand this better than most.

Shane, though, challenges this statement. Tapping into his marketing knowledge, he made this simple statement: “The method is the message.”

Some College Ministry Conversations

19 10 2009

I have a couple of weighty posts coming in the next few days or so. Before we go there, though, I thought it would be cool to bring you up to speed on some great conversations regarding college ministry happening elsewhere.

Ed Stetzer, Lifeway Research Guru, shares some statistics about college students and their use of Facebook. College ministers need to be where the students are at and there is no doubt they are on Facebook. But, what is the effect it’s having? Read Ed’s post.

Guy Chmieleski asks the question “Is it OK to close the door?” How do we balance our to-do list and relationships with students? Jump in.

The brand new blog over for the Association of Collegeiate Ministries is called HeartOfCampusMinistry.com and there have been some great posts kicking things off. Tim Hawkins offers 3 Points for Tuning Up Small Groups. I made a quick post about college ministry being a sort of Reverse Missionary Work.

My good friend Benson Hines is traveling around the country (again!) and visiting lots of campus ministries. Follow his journey.

That should give you something to read for a few minutes. As always, thanks for popping over to MyNameIsBrandon.com.

Reverse Missionary Work

13 10 2009

I hope to continue posting some Catalyst thoughts over the next few days. Things have been insane upon my return to the cold, winter-y Midwest from the warm, summer-y ATL.

While I am playing catch-up and working on some more Catalyst thoughts, allow me to direct your attention to a post that I just wrote for a new campus ministry blog called, “The Heart of Campus Ministry.”

My post is entitled “Reverse Missionary Work” and I have been meaning to share some of those thoughts here.

So…head over there and read my post.

Catalyst Reflections, part 2

9 10 2009

Today was a very long day. This post will most likely be very short, as we get to do it all again tomorrow.

  • I was excited after a good test run with live blogging yesterday. We had the biggest day on this blog ever. I know this experiment is scratching you where you itch.
  • I got up at 4:50am to be at the arena by 6:15am. The place was already crawling with people. By the time the doors opened at 7:45am, there were 10,000+ there.
  • Andy Stanley started the morning right.
  • Jessica Jackley talked about world poverty and our role in it, followed by Malcolm Gladwell sharing weaving together 3 or 4 stories masterfully to illustrate over-confidence.
  • Shane Hipps is a former ad executive for Porsche who became a Mennonite pastor. He shared some of the lessons he has learned in one of the most thought-provoking sessions of the day. He was followed by Rob Bell.
  • Tony Dungy, former NFL head coach, was then interviewed. Being a big Colts fan, this was a highlight.
  • Matt Chandler challenged us to go deep with the Scriptures, as he always does.
  • And finally, Francis Chan led us in a night of reading Scripture over the room and into a time of communion. Amazing to share this experience with 13,000 other people.
  • I think one of the reasons Catalyst is so successful is because they offer an experience…not just a series of sermons. Today we threw soft footballs on to the stage at a young football team. They brought trucks into the arena. Each attendee got a colored flashlight to play with during the dark times in the arena. They dropped stuffed animals from a helicopter while we waited to get in.  One of the MCs got an on-the-spot tattoo. You may not agree with that, but you have to admit…it provides an experience.
  • The 20-34 year old generation is a passionate generation. Passionate worshipers. Passionate change agents. Passionate dreamers.

Tomorrow, we do it all again. The first session kicks off at 8:30am EST. Check here for details!

Session #6 w/ Francis Chan

8 10 2009
  • 6:09 PM mynameisbrandon - This session will begin at approximately 8pm EST.And good news! We now have more reliable internet service. No more hiccups!
  • 7:39 PM mynameisbrandon - I am in here LIVE. About 20 minutes until the beginning of the session.
  • 7:48 PM Jimbo - Want to be there, Chan will rock da house
  • 7:48 PM mynameisbrandon - @Jimbo I hear ya. I am very excited to get to hear Chan. Have you read his books?
  • 7:49 PM mynameisbrandon - Aaron Keyes is going to start the night off by leading us in some worship.
  • 7:54 PM mynameisbrandon - This place is starting to fill up again after dinner. Every seat in this house (12,000+) is full.
  • 8:01 PM mynameisbrandon - The crowd is getting restless to start…starting chants and cheers and clapping.
  • 8:02 PM mynameisbrandon - Francis Chan provided one of the most amazing moments in Catalyst history a few years ago…stopped mid-sermon, knelt before God…for like 2 minutes. Complete silence filled the auditorium.

Session #5 w/ Matt Chandler

8 10 2009
  • 4:52 PM mynameisbrandon - Welcome all. Thanks for stopping by. This session should start in about 8 minutes. My internet connections have been moody, so if I go quiet for awhile…just hang loose. I will come back again.
  • 5:14 PM mynameisbrandon - I think things are getting started now.
  • 5:15 PM mynameisbrandon - Steve Fee is rocking the house.
  • 5:17 PM mynameisbrandon - The stage is in the shape of a big X and they have lights underneath it doing cool things.
  • 5:18 PM mynameisbrandon - I’m looking forward to hearing Matt Chandler again. He brought it last night in the lab and is in regular rotation in my iPod.

  • 2:47 PM mynameisbrandon - There are hundreds of little Nerf footballs flying around the arena…gifts to us from Catalyst. It’s pretty fun to watch.
  • 2:49 PM mynameisbrandon - I think Tony is going to bring the house down. He is so different from everyone else on the main stage.
  • 3:16 PM danmelanie - It should be an interesting talk from Tony.
