There are several reasons why we are doing the “Share (20) & Prayer (4:3-4)” campaign at CCH that I wrote about a few days ago. I will share them with you as we progress.
First of all, why ignore it? We need funds. We need funds to be able to operate. God has ALWAYS given us exactly what we need exactly when we need it. Our paychecks are occasionally late or we have to hold off on a purchase…but our lights have never been turned off. While paychecks are sometimes late, it’s never put us out too far.
Our summer months are financially slower than other months. I’m not entirely sure why this is. I think it could be because, in people’s minds, campus ministries probably aren’t doing anything during the summer since it isn’t the main school year months. Therefore, they don’t need money.
However, while ministry may look differently in the summer, we never really stop. There are still many students around taking summer courses or working. We have our weekly Bible studies. I meet with many of them throughout each week, just like normal, for purposes of discipleship, counseling, praying, planning, and so on.
And of course, we spend much of our summer planning for the upcoming school year. There are “connection” events to prepare (BBQs, Sundaes on Mondays, Games on the Green) as well as the fall semester’s teaching schedule (the book of James for this fall). We coordinate and place and train dozens of student leaders to do everything from leading a Family Group to heading up our Nursing Home ministry to taking charge of our Follow-Up team to helping in our office.
We spend the most of our money in August and September. These two months are crucial for connecting with students, especially new students. They are deciding what organizations to invest themselves in, where they are going to spend their time, and who they are going to be. We long for them to be connected to Jesus and to a community of faith. And so we spend hundreds of hours attempting to do both of those things in the first month of the school year. And we spend the necessary funds for this as well.
And so…reason #1 for the “Share (20) & Prayer (4:3-4)” project? We could really use the additional funds to get our school year started off on the right foot.
