Session #4 w/ Tony Dungy

  • 2:46 PM mynameisbrandon – Hello everyone. This session will start in just a few minutes. I’ve been having some issues with my internet popping in and out…if it gets quiet from me for a minute, just hang loose.
  • 2:47 PM mynameisbrandon – There are hundreds of little Nerf footballs flying around the arena…gifts to us from Catalyst. It’s pretty fun to watch.
  • 2:49 PM mynameisbrandon – I think Tony is going to bring the house down. He is so different from everyone else on the main stage.
  • 3:16 PM danmelanie – It should be an interesting talk from Tony.
  • 3:16 PM dadrowles – Do you know the good Doctors Dawson in Maryville? Dr. Jane is a cousin to my wife Peggy.
  • 3:16 PM Doug Rowles – I think I will join you for this session, Brandon.
  • 3:16 PM mynameisbrandon – Had a hiccup…Tony just took the stage.
  • 3:17 PM mynameisbrandon – Let me give you a recap.
  • 3:17 PM mynameisbrandon – Tony is being interviewed at the moment…talking about his past, his experiences, and so on.
  • 3:17 PM mynameisbrandon – Tony said growing up, he learned the value of playing on a team and learning that you don’t win every game.

  • 3:18 PM mynameisbrandon – Tony said his wife has played a huge role in 27 years of keeping him grounded. She has reminded him that he is “not all that!”
  • 3:18 PM mynameisbrandon – Tony and his wife have adopted children…when they got started in the process, Tony was not excited about it.
  • 3:19 PM mynameisbrandon – When they were first being interviewed, Tony found out that there were hundreds of kids waiting to be adopted. Tony went from reluctance…and now they have adopted 4 kids.
  • 3:19 PM mynameisbrandon – Adoption has taught Tony a lot about God. A lot about love. He loves his adopted children as much as his biological kids.
  • 3:19 PM mynameisbrandon – As a leader, we need to remember that things are not always going to go well. And people need their leaders the most when things are rough.
  • 3:20 PM mynameisbrandon – Tony is sharing how hard it was to be fired from Tampa…and then to have Tampa when the SuperBowl the next year after his being fired.
  • 3:21 PM mynameisbrandon – Tony acknowledged that God’s purposes were accomplished in Tampa…Tony just wasn’t there at the end of it.
  • 3:22 PM mynameisbrandon – Tony realized, after winning the SuperBowl, that he had about 30 seconds on TV in front of 100 million people. What would you say?
  • 3:22 PM mynameisbrandon – He wanted to give the credit to God. And he did so.
  • 3:23 PM mynameisbrandon – Michael Vick is the topic on the table now.
  • 3:25 PM mynameisbrandon – Tony was supposed to have a fishing trip with Michael before the dogfighting charges came down. He wondered if Michael would have made better decisions if the two of them could have gone on that fishing trip.
  • 3:25 PM mynameisbrandon – Tony said Michael didn’t get the direction from his dad that he needed. Tony said he felt like he could step into that role for him.
  • 3:28 PM mynameisbrandon – The leader of All Pro Dad, an organization for fathers that Tony works with, is now on stage.
  • 3:29 PM mynameisbrandon – As a culture, we are technologically connected as never before. Yet, the family is disconnected more than anything.
  • 3:30 PM mynameisbrandon – 90% of those incarcerated grew up without fathers at home.
  • 3:30 PM mynameisbrandon – Tony is highly involved in prison ministry.
  • 3:31 PM mynameisbrandon – Check out allprodad.com and imom.com
  • 3:31 PM mynameisbrandon – A word from Tony for 13,000 church leaders at Catalyst: “We need you.”
  • 3:32 PM mynameisbrandon – The solution is Jesus…we have the answer. The answers cannot be found anywhere else.
  • 3:32 PM mynameisbrandon – Standing ovation for Tony!
  • 3:34 PM mynameisbrandon – I was hoping Tony would speak to us…and not just be interviewed…but he has gotten the biggest and best response from the crowd today.
  • 3:34 PM mynameisbrandon – What a class act guy. Such humility.
  • 3:34 PM mynameiskeri – I didn’t realize there was a similar site for moms.
  • 3:34 PM dadrowles – Amen to that comment from Tony
  • 3:35 PM mynameisbrandon – @mynameiskeri I didn’t either.
  • 3:36 PM mynameisbrandon – Reggie Joiner…author of Think Orange…and a huge advocate for a new vision for family ministry…is going to wrap up this session.
  • 3:36 PM Dan S – I am disappointed he did not speak more about his prison ministry.
  • 3:36 PM dadrowles – I will check it out in the morning.
  • 3:37 PM mynameisbrandon – @Dan S Me, too…he spent most of his time on fatherhood.
  • 3:37 PM mynameisbrandon – “Our children pick up on what really matters to us without us saying a word.” –Rob Bell, from the earlier session. Brought back on the table in this session.
  • 3:38 PM dadrowles – All Pro Dad is a very good site and I read it daily.
  • 3:38 PM mynameisbrandon – @dadrowles As do I…I get their emails everyday in my inbox.
  • 3:40 PM mynameisbrandon – In the book of Nehemiah…the busy-ness of Nehemiah’s role as a leader, said this: “Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome…and fight for your brothers, and daughters and mothers…”
  • 3:40 PM mynameisbrandon – We cannot forget what is at stake. The fight is ultimately about our sons and daughters and our families and homes.
  • 3:40 PM Kevin – got reggie’s book in hand right now, just opened it for the first time…on the front end of ministry strategizing for new multi-site campus – look forward to hearing what he has to say.
  • 3:41 PM mynameisbrandon – In the craziness of leading his people in a massive project, Nehemiah reminded us that the fight is for our families.
  • 3:43 PM mynameisbrandon – Our kids, our wives, and our families need to know that we think that our relationship with them is worth fighting for!
  • 3:48 PM mynameisbrandon – As leaders in the church…the greatest gift you can give to the communities outside of your church and the families inside your church…is to figure out how to fight for your relationships with your family.
  • 3:48 PM Kevin – you’re doing a great job updating Brandon, thank you
  • 3:48 PM mynameisbrandon – @Kevin Thanks!
  • 3:49 PM mynameisbrandon – This session is over. The next one, with Matt Chandler, will start in about 10 minutes. See the blog and Twitter for the link!
  • 3:54 PM dadrowles – Time for me to go home, supper and then to class. Thank you for the updates. See you later today or in the morning.
  • 3:54 PM David in Eureka,MO – Thanks you Branden
