2 Questions you want to ask & answer

Thomas Merton asks two questions that are “must-answer-questions”. The answers may or may not come quickly, but they will come to the one who continues to seek them. When the answers are revealed the benefit will only be experienced when you do the hard, long work of “doing.”

Here they are…

“If you want to identify me, ask me not where I live, or what I like to eat, or how I comb my hair, but ask me what I think I am living for, in detail, and ask me what I think is keeping me from living fully the thing I want to live for. Between these two answers you can determine the identity of any person. The better answer he has, the more of a person he is.”

The two questions:

  1. What are you living for? State the details!
  2. What is keeping you from fully living out that purpose? Identify the obstacles.
Now enjoy your sleepless nights as you ponder these questions! And once you find the answers enjoy your deep soul rest!

this time of the year in campus ministry, we ask the same questions over and over of new students to get to “know” them:

what’s your name?
where are you from?
what’s your major?

maybe we need to ask these better questions?
